Hunter lost his battle with cancer surrounded by family and friends at a Melbourne hospice on 21st May 2011. He was 71.

In 1978 he won an AFI award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his part as Len Maguire in the movie Newsfront. Hunter's acting career stretches back to 1957, when he appeared as an extra in The Shiralee.

Hunter also appeared in Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia, the comedies Bad Eggs and Crackerjack and the 1970s bushranger movies Ned Kelly and Mad Dog Morgan. Kiwi audiences also enjoyed the iconic actor with his portrayal of Bob -the character he played in the original movie- in the stage musical which was based on movie.

Born in Ballarat, Hunter is one of Australia's most recognisable on-screen faces and is described by the Internet Movie Database as “having worked with almost every notable Australian director and actor of the last 30 years”.
